Piano lessons should be fun and rewarding for students, their families and, yes, the teacher. Getting to know students-what they like, how they learn, what frightens them, what inspires them-is my job and my joy! The student will learn to play a piece at the first lesson, which is free. After spending lesson time together, making a decision is comfortable for everyone.
Private piano lessons are offered September-May. The first lesson is a get-acquainted lesson at no charge and no obligation. Other activities such as piano lessons and camps emphasizing improvisation and composition are offered in the summer. Students feel pride in their original work and enjoy using, rather than studying, music theory.
“What method do you use to teach piano?” The answer is, “The method, or combination of methods, that meets the needs of the individual student.”
“Do you teach adults?” The answer is an enthusiastic, “Yes!”
“What is the role of parents?” Parents’ first and most important role is to listen to students play and praise their accomplishments at least 5 days a week. Parents are also responsible for making sure students arrive 5 minutes early for lessons, with all books, music, practice records and recordings in hand and all toiletry needs taken care of. Parents are urged, but not required to attend lessons.
As a tool for learning and achievement, students are encouraged, but not required, to experience the joy of performance by playing the piano:
Martha Roche, has a Bachelor of Music Education, with a voice major and piano minor. Her early experience included schools and church choirs. Teaching piano became her primary focus and passion after moving to NC. The studio features a Kawaii Grand Piano, an 88 key digital piano, a five-octave Yamaha keyboard, a computer, recording equipment and various instruments. A small waiting area and a bathroom are available for students and parents.
" I just wanted to drop you an email to tell you how well Maddie is doing with piano. A spot finally opened up with Catherine at church. She has been taking for about 3 months and is doing so well! She continues to LOVE to play. She and Catherine are set to do a duet in church . . . . sometime this summer. You know how she LOVES playing duets! I can't thank you enough for providing such a great foundation for learning to play the piano.” Doran
"For 9 years, you not only taught Brooke to play the piano but more importantly you taught her how to make music. Your support and encouragement made her love performing and being the best she could be. Today she is sharing your teaching skills at college by teaching underprivileged children with the same songs and style you gave her. She was lucky to have you as an influence in her life." Shelley
“I am finishing college at New York University. I (recently) got back into playing and writing, and started to learn how to write for multiple instruments, vocals, etc. And tonight is the opening night for a production of Measure for Measure at NYU - with several (of my) compositions. I really just wanted to send you a quick thank you for all of the time and work you put into teaching me how to play music - as well as dealing with my "alternative learning methods" as a student :) It has really impacted me as an individual, and I can't tell you how many doors it has opened for me.” Garrett
"You made the recital so relaxed and effortless and put all at ease with your kind warmth and gracious manner. I am sad (that it’s all over).” Deborah (following her daughter’s last recital before graduating high school)
“Bryce is studying with Phyllis T, and is really coming along. It sounds like he can really feel the music. Thanks so much for giving him a great introductory first year and fond memories of his first teacher. We really appreciate it.” Brian
“Wynn, Lake & Lawrence are all taking piano now from Anna P. . .They are learning and progressing, and having fun. Martha is a wonderful piano teacher! She is very encouraging and has fun with her students. She helps her students to meet their full potential. I highly recommend her as a piano teacher.” Elizabeth
